According to the Center for Disease Control, the implementation of Ignition Interlock Devices in the vehicles of convicted DUI offenders has reduced the rates of repeat drinking and driving by 67%. This number is significant, in that it proves these devices are keeping the streets safe for families, and drastically reducing the threat of injury or death from a person who chooses to drink and then drive.
17 states currently require the mandatory installation of an ignition interlock device in any vehicles driven by a first-time convicted DUI offender. As these first-time offenders are estimated to have driven under the influence of alcohol an average of 80 times prior to conviction, these devices are helping to turn habitual drunk drivers into safe drivers.
