ignition interlockIgnition interlock devices provide safety assurance to and peace of mind to drivers on the road, preventing an intoxicated driver from operating a vehicle.  However, as an editorial in The Baltimore Sun explains, the ignition interlock laws in Maryland are not tough enough. According to the author, a recent law requiring the installation of an ignition interlock device in any offender’s vehicle who was found driving drunk with passengers under the age of 16 certainly does help keep children safer from drunk drivers. But, these devices are successful in reducing the rates of drunk driving fatalities across the nation, and should be required for any DUI offenders in Maryland. With around one-third of traffic fatalities in Maryland attributed to drunk drivers, the state may need to examine its stance on all drunk drivers. Read more here: Dancing around DUIs [Editorial]
