Oops, I Didn’t Install an IID

Didn't install an IIDOnce you’re confronted with a DUI or drunk driving conviction, your responsibility to remain sober behind the wheel is even more important. As a result of your DUI, you likely have an ignition interlock device (IID) requirement through the court or your DMV. What happens next is entirely up to you.

If you have an IID requirement, not installing an IID is not an option for you at that point. Not if you want to regain your ability to drive legally and avoid further consequences. If you don’t install the interlock you could face a much longer requirement with the device, or be removed from the program that is monitoring your progress.

Not only that, but if you are driving a vehicle without an IID then you will definitely have more penalties in your future. You could be held accountable for not installing the device as well as driving illegally on a suspended or revoked driver’s license.

Finally, if you are caught driving a vehicle without an IID while under the influence, your consequences will be much stricter.

In many cases, an offender can have trouble affording the device, making it tempting to forego the installation. Many states have programs for those with financial need or funds to help offset the costs. It is always better to find out if you qualify for a lower cost IID than risk further legal or administrative consequences.

What happens after you are required to install an IID is entirely your choice, but that also means you’re expected to make the right choice. A DUI can be a lot easier to move beyond when you use the resources available, including installing and using an ignition interlock device.
