You are here: Home / Resources / DWI Education: New York Drinking Driver Program
March 11, 2015 by Editorial Staff

ignition interlockA DWI in New York in a serious crime with plenty of penalties and consequences. All convictions fall under “Leandra’s Law,” which requires even first-time DWI offenders to install an ignition interlock device, as well as anyone with more than one conviction.  As a DWI offender, you could be eligible to attend the New York Drinking Driver Program (DDP), as well.  Since each DWI conviction does require your driver’s license to be suspended, both of these programs are helping offenders resume their lives and maintain employment and other responsibilities while ensuring the public of their sobriety behind the wheel.

The New York DDP is a program that focuses on the education of a DWI offender in order to change the impulse or habit of drinking and driving. It also screens participants for any signs of substance or alcohol abuse, and will refer those in need to the proper agencies that can help with those situations. There are plenty of benefits to the New York DDP that can help you understand the error of your ways when you were driving while intoxicated, and the program is a large factor in whether you are able to drive legally after your DWI.

Once you satisfactorily complete the New York DDP and fulfill any other requirements of your DWI offense, you will be allowed to reinstate your license, or apply for a new one. This means that you will have to attend all of the classes, submit to the screening, and that you cannot have any further drunk driving charges or convictions for the duration of the class. The program also does not factor into any reduction in your court-ordered fines, or a delay in paying them. However, you can be assured that once you have completed the program, you will have the freedom to drive once again, as well as the security of an ignition interlock device to ensure you never have to face a DWI again.
