Once a person has been convicted for drinking and driving, many states require that offenders have their driver’s license suspended. However, according to Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD), between 50 and 75 percent of the people with a suspended license due to driving under the influence still drive illegally without a license. This creates a major safety concern for the public.
One way that states have been preventing people from driving on a suspended license is by mandating the installation of ignition interlock devices. These ignition interlock devices connect to the ignition system of a vehicle. In order for the vehicle to turn on a driver must submit a breath sample which measures the driver’s blood alcohol content. If the driver’s blood alcohol content is too high the ignition interlock will disable a vehicle from starting.
Statistics prove that Ignition interlock devices are greatly reducing the number of people who continue to operate a vehicle normally after committing a DUI and are also reducing the amount repeat DUI offenses.
